Christmas Movies – Top 10 Best Ever

Movies have a special place for everybody and they have to tug at a heart string or leave an impression before they fit into the over all milieu of the best. So read on and have a look at some great Christmas movies that you can share with others as gifts or spend the day watching during the holiday season. As an added bonus you get to pick the rank of the best and the least best. Hope you have fun. One key to remember is that Christmas is not a new holiday so the list has some real old movies. Old in the sense of production but new to every generation that decides to take a look back at the essence of the holiday season.

1. ’We’re No Angels’ (1955) Staring Humphrey Bogart
One of the original genuine Hollywood tough guys in a great old school black and white flick. No special effects here just excellent acting. Set in French Guiana, just before Christmas, three infamous Devil’s Island prison “lifers” escape and plan to rob a local merchant and his family. “We’ll cut their throats for a Christmas present,” Bogie says. As the spirit of Christmas would have it they grow fond of the family before the three can commit their heinous crime. They later discover that the merchant is on the verge of bankruptcy. Then they have an epiphany and help to save the family business. Don’t get the 1989 remake with the other tough guy. It can’t compare.

2. ’Die Hard’ (1988) Starring Bruce Willis
What else is there to say? A Die Hard movie without a number or a prepositional phrase in the title plus Bruce Willis wearing his black ‘beater’ t-shirt. Christmas Eve bad guys rousted by the scruffy looking good guy in a style befitting only Bruce Willis. Stale popcorn taste good when you watch this one. This a real beer and popcorn genre flick. No eggnog here. Suck’em down while you sit back and let the action roll.

3. ’A Christmas Carol’ (1951) Starring Alastair Sim
Hands down the definitive film versions of Charles Dickens’ classic novel. The benchmark that all the other versions attempt to reach. If you want to see the story about Scrooge, this is it. Don’t waste your time with imitations, get the original strength dose.

4. ’Elf’ (2003) Starring Will Ferrell
Three words say it all; Buddy the Elf. What do you mean you have never seen this one? For that you get a giant lump of coal in your stocking. Will Ferrell is a talented comedian and you can see him in one of the strongest roles of his career as Buddy the Elf. This is a heartwarming story with a sense of humor that will fit into any holiday theme. People who enjoy his acting will love this one. If you are not a Will Ferrell, shame on you and bah hum bug.

5. ’Miracle on 34th Street’ (1947) Starring Edmund Gwenn
Kris Kringle, a last-minute replacement for the drunken Santa is offered a job as a Macy’s toy-department Santa. Complications start when the store psychologist, arranges to have him locked up in an asylum as a lunatic. With a name like Kris Kringle one can see why this guy might have riled the psychologist’s ego and stirred up a little controversy. Another one of those classic movies that will get your holiday spirit in gear. A real marshmallow and cocoa movie. This is a must see.

6. ’National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ (1989) Starring Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase does it again with his facial affects and humorous one liners. No doubt you can relate to the dysfunctional family relationships and the interactions. Even if you are not a National Lampoon genre fan, you can enjoy the benign one liners and silly gags that make it an all around fun flick to show this holiday.

7. The Preacher’s Wife (1996) Starring Denzel Washington
Fine and uplifting remake of the 1947 classic The Bishop’s wife. Denzel Washington delivers a great performance as does the entire cast and the music is fantastic. One for the entire family to enjoy.

8. Diva’s Christmas Carol (2000) Starring Vanessa Williams
Vanessa Williams is “Ebony Scrooge,” a miserly Diana Ross-type singer. She is not just another pretty face in this adaptation of the Dickens classic; she does a fine job of acting. Since you already can figure out that theme is based on the classic, now you can sit back and watch as Vanessa Williams sings and fills the holiday screen with her talent and good looks.

9. ’It’s a Wonderful Life’ (1946) Starring James Stewart
A tale of everything Christmas; family, friends and the joy of life. Set on Christmas Eve, 1946, George Bailey who considers himself a failure, faces financial ruin and arrest and is seriously contemplating suicide. Although it was produced in 1946 and did not do well at the box office, when you think about the storyline and the financial climate today it send chills up and down your spine. Some classics are tested by the technical aspects, others by the depth of actors and the story it tells. This is one movie that will have everybody asking is it art imitating life or was life depicted in as art. A must see.

10. ’A Christmas Story’ (1983) Starring Peter Billingsley
The film has since become a holiday classic and has been shown on television during the Christmas season, usually as one of the 24 hour marathon Christmas movies. Ralphie Parker wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. He has to endure run-ins with his younger brother, the school bully and other issues. He does not know how he can ever survive long enough to get the BB gun for Christmas. He tries everything to make it through the entangled stressors he has to encounter. Despite protests from his mother, the school teacher and the Christmas store Santa who all tell him that he’ll shoot his eye out, Ralphie persists. This is a great movie with several sub plots and themes that everybody can relate to. This is one is a keeper.

Which actress made the best version ever of Audrey Griswold on the Chevy Chase vacation films?

Dana Baron: Trip to Walley World.
Dana Hill: Trip to Europe.
Juliette Lewis: Christmas.
Marisol Nichols: Trip to Las Vegas.

I think the first 3 are really good ones. I was really disappointed how on the fourth movie they transformed so much the character and turned Audrey into a kind of fool slut. Even worse, she didn’t look like the three previous because she was brunette. Those were too many changes from one seuqel to another.
What do you think?
