Earthquake-Are we at risk for second Catastrophy?
It's been ten days since the devastating 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti and it was followed by a powerful 5.9 aftershock Wednesday scare the daylights out of the remaining survivors. It looks like natural disasters happening now more than ever before. I have been told if there is a reason to panic about the future of mother earth as we know it. Hot vacation spots in the Dominican Republic is just 150 miles away from the wreck and tourists claim that you never would know that there was a disaster next door if it does not make the world news. It is frightening to think that they too could fall victim to a terrible disaster like this. Is the Dominican Republic has a reason to be worried and what with the neighboring islands or Florida, which is 710 miles away? Is the world at risk of a major disaster? Rather than get totally paranoid about things I can not control, I decided to do a little online research on earthquakes and tsunamis to see if we are more vulnerable now than ever before.
Earthquakes are certainly nothing new to our planet. The first recorded earthquake was in 1831 BC and took place in China's Shandong Province. Earthquakes are a result of the movement of tectonic plates and is fairly common. Florida and South Dakota had the fewest earthquakes in America. Alaska are at greatest risk for earthquakes, since it is the most seismically active area of the world. There are about a year in Alaska quake measured a magnitude of 7 with several large quakes in the order at 8 or more on a once every 14 years. Earthquakes can reach as deep as 400 miles below the earth's surface in areas which are situated on the edge of tectonic plates.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is the term used to describe the area around the massive Pacific plate where volcanoes and earthquakes are most common. This area is where 90% of all earthquakes have occurred. Pacific Ring of Fire around the Pacific reaching from the Peru-Chile Trench through Panama, up to Alaska, over to Japan around Australia and New Zealand through a horseshoe.
The second most popular area for seismic earthquake occurs, along Alpide Belt. This is where 5-6% of all earthquakes have occurred. The Alpide Belt consists of a large series of mountains that stretches along the border with the Eurasian plate, African plate and the Arabian plate. It includes the Himalayan, the Alps, Carpathians and more. It continues through the Mediterranean and ends at the Atlantic Ocean near Spain.
The third most notorious area earthquake occurs is along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This strip basically slices Atlantic in half curving west towards Haiti and the Dominican Republic. This is the longest mountain range in the world and below water with Iceland, its largest peak above sea level. This area experiences seismic activity on the grounds that it is located between the Eurasian, North American, African and South American plates.
There is currently no way to predict when an earthquake will occur or how significant it will be, but one can say that there is a 100% chance that there will be one day. Most earthquake occurs along the Pacific Ring of Fire, so there is more of a probability for a striking there today, if just a rumble or a 7 on the Richter scale. There are a few countries where the quakes are more common and studies have been conducted to measure any front quakes that could lead to an earthquake. Some researchers measure the beginning of an earthquake of the level of radon from the car, and some consider it way that the rocks crack in relation to stress. Overall, we just need to be satisfied with not knowing exactly when an earthquake will occur or how severe it will be until there is a valid measure for prediction.
Tsunami
Tsunami occurs when a large quantity of water is displaced and a series of waves generated up to what most call tidal waves and is most common in Japan, where the term originated. One of the events that can cause a tsunami is an underwater earthquakes large size just below the ocean floor. Even if an undersea earthquake is detected, there is no foolproof tool to measure whether a tsunami absolute will follow, and how powerful it will be. The most valid warning sign civilians near the coast is when there is a dramatic sucked the sea from the coastline, exposes a large land that is normally covered by water. People who notes that this occurrence is warned to make an immediate run for higher ground when there is very little time between the reimbursement scheme and the huge wave of destruction. Places with a high risk of tsunami as Hawaii, use the devices on buoys that can detect when large undersea earthquake occurs and acts as a tsunami warning system. They are now installing the same system in the Indian Ocean since the disaster that happened last time a Tsunami hit. Tsunami are not new occurrences as there have been 25 throughout the last century but they do occur less frequently than earthquakes.
I did not find any information to support the idea that disasters like these are more common now than they were years ago. There is far more media coverage than ever before. There is new technology and people generally seem more attracted to news about disasters than any other news. Photos on the Internet of sick and injured people whose families have been torn apart by tragedy live news reports, updates are underway and will be a while. This cover takes this tragedy and make it right for people around the world. It brings us a sense of grief and fear, but also informs the world in a country in need of help and donations. It makes us question if the same could happen to us and gives many of us a feeling of unrest, leaving us with unanswered questions. The best thing to do for those of us who have not been affected by a disaster as the earthquake in Haiti, is to realize how lucky we are and to contribute what we can to the cause. There seems to be no more reason to believe that there will be an increase in natural disasters, so right now the best we can do is stay informed, stop panic and live life fully.
