My wife enjoys the great outdoors, but she can only come up with sand and dirt in a few days. After roughing it (in the RV:), she has need a nice hotel and a little luxury. So when she had enough and after many great desert adventure, we have used Las Vegas as a resting and cleaning up on the spot. Within one hour travel from Las Vegas there are many places to go fishing, boating, camping, flying, and western riding. The desert is also a photographer's dream that changes shapes and colors with each area and time of day. Sometimes after a little break, we return to the wilderness for another adventure.

If you're from back East or another country, you should know that although the desert is beautiful, it is still a desert, and you need to know where you are going through a good map and plenty of water and make sure your rental car have a spare and is full of gas. Get a good GPS unit and practice with it. We used our to find the things we looked at a map.

My wife always arranged for a discount flights and hotel reservations well in advance. Once we arrived from the river all dirty and hungry, so we headed directly to the buffet line. They were nice to us, and seemed not to notice how messy we were.

Most people know the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, but are not aware of the many campsites and marinas in the area. It is called Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and the huge lake offers a wealth of things to do and places to go. The Mojave, Great Basin and Sonoran Deserts come together in this area and the coming together is like the day meetings at night or in the desert meetings woods. This edge thing is what makes for great beauty and great photography.

There are all kinds of great trips for everyone. They have a wide range of helicopter flights and bus trips to Grand Canyon and rafting adventure on the Colorado River. There is a trip with luxury van and even a trip to the Grand Canyon in a Hummer. There is Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour and Ranch adventure Helicopter Tour, which lands on a working ranch in the canyon, and they serve a great lunch there.

Horseback riding in cowboy country can include lunch on the trail or a BBQ at the end. The tour people will even drive you there and pick the perfect horse for you, no experience necessary. There is nothing like a dinner over an open campfire. After typing this, I must go back because it's just too much fun. If you have time and do not mind the drive then all kinds of stories open up to you. Within three hours, the Drive Zion National Park, and they have everything including hotels. If you are an artist or photographer go.

If Zion is a little too much for now, try the Southern Californians call "the river". What they believe is the Colorado River at Lake Mohave. So I did miss something? You bet I missed a lot, as the secret spot that only my wife about where we buried the gold, but you get the idea.
